The inherent open, dynamic, and unpredictable nature of Web service environments means that traditional approaches are of little help in providing a trusted framework of interactions. One of the articles in this issue describes a framework that uses a state-machine-based modeling approach to support life-cycle policy management and automated enforcement. Another discusses the use of a service-oriented architecture to investigate trust management techniques for specifying dynamic policies in complex integrated service-oriented networks. Other topics covered in this issue include open grid services architectures, IPv6 security challenges, realistic electronic books, and a cache profiling tool that finds the root causes of poor data locality
